Election Night Cocktails

30824501Are you planning your election party?  Or just planning on staying home with the family watching the results roll in?  Well, I was originally going to share a cocktail that my sister raved about after she returned home from a girl’s weekend.  But then it struck me that given it has cranberry juice in it – it is a RED drink…and only appropriate for those McCain/Palin households to drink on election night.  So of course I had to go and search for a blue drink for those Obama/Biden households.  There are some great ideas out there.  You can start at this site, the reviewjournal.com.  This site not only has drink recipes, but some interesting ideas for planning a red and blue menu as well.

The Red Drink, The Maverick

2 cups of cranberry juice
1 small can pineapple juice (Dole has a 6-pack of these)
1 cup Vodka
2 cups Club Soda (give or take a 1/2 cup depending on how light and refreshing/toxic you want or need these to be)
Fresh lime to taste and a slice in a glass

Pour ice over and ahhhh (makes a small pitcher’s worth)

And now for the Blue:

The Obama Mama Blue Hawaiian

3/4 oz. Light Rum
3/4 oz. Vodka
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
3 oz. Pineapple Juice
1 oz. Sweet & Sour Mix

Combine all ingredients and mix well. If using ice, mix the ingredients in a blender. Serve in a tall glass. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a cherry. Make sure you wear a lei when drinking.

And of course for you good ‘ole independents,  you can’t beat the Red, White and Blue Martini:

Red, White and Blue Martini (From the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in DC)

Blend:

4 oz ice
1 oz vodka
2oz pineapple juice
3 tbsp of Coco Lopez coconut milk
1 oz half and half

Pour into martini glass.  Pour 1/2 Tbsp almond flavored liquor so that it sinks to the bottom. Lightly pour ½ Tbsp. Blue Curacao along rim of glass, so that it floats on top to create red, white, and blue layers.’

Ok…this almost makes me want to host a party…on a Tuesday night after working all day.  Let’s see what happens!

You always make my Friday with early morning postings about cocktail hour. Keep ‘em coming, depending upon the outcome of the election I may need a few new ideas for stiff drinks.

Gentle Reader – I’m so impressed that you’re having a party…and WISH I had been able to pull one off. But my in-laws are coming over, so at least we will be drinking the blue cocktails!

Wish I could have a party too … I am planning to help with the campaign, where possible. When I get home, I plan to mix a few stiff ones.
