I’m an Office Nomad

As Manager Mom put out the challenge to us to think about our intellectual sanctuary, I’ve finally come to an astounding realization of the source of my disorganization.  Mind you, I’ve always prided myself on my keen organizational skills, but lately I can’t stay on top of it all.  Could this be because I have my religiously written “to do” lists spread across no less than seven work spaces?  It’s finally become clear to me; I have multiple office disorder.

My most sacred work space is my desk in the “corporation” – where I spend 3 days of the week.  It is here that I get to choose when to go to the bathroom, get a cup of coffee or eat lunch, and for that alone, I’m eternally grateful.  It is also here that I’m the most productive – but unfortunately that’s corporate productivity…not personal.

So to my personal work spaces at home:

Desk 2:  Kitchen Counter to the right of the Stove:  Where many “to do” and grocery lists get written, and quick notes, while I flip eggs and pancakes.  dsc_02891

Desk 3:  Little Kitchen Desk:  Primary landing pad for Bed Bath & Beyond and Bob’s Store coupons. Primary place for piles to accumulate, which these days are rarely rifled through.  The one place I sit down at on rare occasion to start going through the piles, organizing them into 15 more piles spread out on my kitchen floor, only to be gathered back up into one massive pile again since I run out of time or steam to deal with them.

Desk 4 & 5:  Family Room Corner workstation – Kid’s territory – I’m the adult interloper here.  Features the best computers in the house, but again I play musical chairs between the two computers – as I avail myself of the one that is in non-use.  So my pictures are on one, my music on the other, my documents spread across the both of them.  Makes for a very scizophrenic work session, as I sometimes need to jump back and forth.  And for these computers, I have to line up…and most often I’m 5th in line.  But this is where most of my blog writing takes place, often to the friendly voices of Jay and Conan in the background, while the rest of the household sleeps.

Desk 6:  The actual true “home” office/guestroom of our house – where the computer is always available but takes 10 minutes to rev up and sometimes likes to shut down of its own free will.  It’s also a temperamental googler, but hey – always the best for the kids, right?

Desk 7:  Bedroom Table – a place I seek out if I really need to concentrate and also serves as file graveyard when Desk #3 (or DR table) gets too messy  As you can see, it’s also a repository for a random collection of piles of clean clothes and every computer, ipod, palm pilot, & cell phone cord that we’ve ever owned.  And just to the right, bags and bags of Good Will clothes…just waiting for the ride.

Wow, it was great to go through that therapy session.  A forced self-assessment has led to a light bulb. I’m in desperate need of workspace consolidation.  All though, I’m not sure it’s possible, because the reality is that I need to grab those momentary opportunities of productivity…wherever I may be.

Oh- can I come work in your family room? Also, did you get your cordless phone at Costco? Because I think I have the same one.

I have MOD (multiple office disorder) as well. And I also have an illness about saving Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. I have a stack that’s about as thick as War and Peace, that I can’t bring myself to throw away.

I am IN LOVE with that corner desk unit. Is that custom built or modular from somewhere? I want one!

I also suffer from MOD. My husband wishes I could keep everything contained to my own personal office, but I do keep my piles neat and tidy, ALL OVER THE HOUSE.

But I do not keep BB&B coupons – I keep Joann’s coupons. Which get used more often than not, which contribute to the lack of space in the office, which spills over into the other areas. So really, my lack of organization is completely the fault of Joann’s. I think I will go there today and let them know. And then look at the sale fabric.

Those piles just seem to multiply, don’t they? I got in the bad habit of putting those piles into bags and now my husband calls me “the bag lady”. We’re under construction right now and I’m awaiting my ‘message center’ which I am convinced is going to force me to get and stay organized. In it will be a charging station for all ipods, cell phones, etc…; mail bins for each member of the household; a desktop sized calendar posted with the family schedule; a shredder drawer; a drawer for my purse; hooks for the many, many sets of keys we all have and a few other suprises. I’ll let you know if it helps or just makes for more places to keep the piles :)

Office Nomad! You are of my tribe! In my post, I talked about a couple of places I light to work, but there are about three more that didn’t make the cut.

This one really strikes a chord! In addition to MOD, I suffer from SOS – shared office syndrome. My husband and I are office-incompatible, so while my stacks of paper are “just a moment” away from being organized, HIS stacks of paper usually send me to the brink of despair. The stacks are now migrating to our dining room so the rest of the house is now in peril. I’m thinking that the best solution may be a bonfire for all the papers…

I have my own office at home, so I’m pretty centralized (and lucky, I know). On occasion, a spouse or child will pop in and use my space. That’s fine, EXCEPT for when they leave a trail of empty bottles, crumbs, or discarded paper/envelopes in their wake. I hate to admit it, but I turn into The Incredible Hulk and stomp around the house when that happens … my skin even turns a little green!
